Recently I posted a photo on Instagram and many of you wanted to know more about the Philips Lumea Prestige IPL hair removal.
Okay, let’s put it this way – I have fair skin, dark hair and very long legs, so hair removal has been the doom of my life for many years. I’ve tried everything – shaving, waxing, epilation, creams…painful, time-consuming, inefficient or all of them in the same time.
I’ve wanted to try an IPL device for quite a while, but I was rather sceptical about the results, plus I wasn’t sure how safe they are, as I’m very cautious in regards to my skin, because I have way too many moles.
After reading quite a lot on the topic, I finally decided to give it a go and I ordered the Philips Lumea Prestige BRI956/00 model. It has 4 attachments, depending on the zone you’d like to treat – face, bikini, under arm and a large one for legs, arms etc. I won’t go too much in specifications, as all the information can be found on the website, and it is pointless to just write the same.
Let’s start with the basics. The device will be most efficient if you have fair skin and dark hair. If your skin tone is quite dark, you shouldn’t use it, as the light will get absorbed by the skin and not the hair. Same goes to moles – it is not recommended to use it on them, I personally try to just go around them. Also, another thing worth mentioning, is that this device does not REMOVE the hair. It PREVENTS it from growing back, meaning, that first you need to remove it (I chose shaving, as it is quick and pain-free) and then you go with the Lumea, which pretty much freezes the growth (some serious scientific explanations here, Mell…).
Does it hurt?
That is probably the most frequent question I get. No it, doesn’t. I personally feel a bit of warmth while using it, mainly around the bikini area and absolutely nothing on my legs. I would certainly say it doesn’t hurt, but is rather pleasant. Especially in winter! 😀
Does it work?
YES. That’s the honest and short answer. You will see that the hairs are visibly less even after the second procedure. If you’re persistent, in the end you will be able to go around 2 weeks without having to shave again. Perhaps if you’re using waxing it would be even more efficient, but honestly, I just can’t be bothered.
How long does it take?
The procedures are quite fast, you have two options – using the device on battery or plugged in. It is, obviously, quicker when it’s plugged in as it “recharges” the light faster, however the battery option is brilliant if you are doing small areas and can’t be bothered with cables. Treatment of my legs (and I have a 110cm long legs) takes me around 20 minutes, which is way faster than waxing or epilation. And it doesn’t hurt. Bikini zone you can do in around 3-4 minutes, under arms – 2-3 minutes.
How often do you have to use it?
Philips have created an app, that helps you with your schedule. Initially you start with treatments every 2 weeks, then once you are hair free (in around 2 months), you just do maintainance every 4-8 weeks. It does depend on the individual growth rate of your hair, to be honest. I’m now starting the maintanance and I think I will need to be doing it every 4 weeks. But, really, that is such a relief to me!
So, it is worth it?
To me – 100% yes! It saves me time and pain and oh, you don’t get annoying ingrown hairs. The downside? It’s a bit pricey. If you do, however, calculate how much you’d pay for waxing for a year, it would probably actually save you money! Not to mention, that if you have a busy lifestyle like me, you actually gain free time by using the Philips Lumea.
Long story short, I highly recommend the IPL device by Philips! If you have any other questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments and I will be happy to answer them!
